Roseline Orwa, Atlantic Fellow for Social and Economic Equity, runs a community centre in Kenya for widows who experience stigma at many levels within their rural community. For example, a widow has to be 'sexually cleansed' to clear them of the omen of death. She says this practice is clouded in a blanket of silence, and causes HIV and AIDS to spread. The Atlantic program gave Roseline a world view to drive change. She is raising awareness of women's rights and has provided widows with a growing network of other women in the same situation who are learning how to become more empowered.
