Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health, Shamiel McFarlane, was motivated to find out more about dementia as her own grandmother had lived with its disabling impact. Shamiel is engaged in a research program exploring the feasibility of a home-based primary care program for socially isolated adults with dementia who are cognitively impaired. Such research has been limited to developed countries, but with the Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health, she is exploring whether the primary care program reduces rates of acute hospitalization for patients in rural Jamaica.
